Upgrade starts off good with an engaging premise and setting but sloppy pencils and lazy coloring detract from the enjoyment significantly. The character progression is weak and the writer fails to show us any of the side characters motives. The flow from panel to panel seems rushed and incoherent. The story also lacks from plot holes but theme is quite clever and intriguing.
A friend sent me this graphic novel a few months ago. Since then, I've had a love / hate relationship with this incredible story...or, more specifically, with its vision of the future. While I'm amazed by the author's ability to imagine the endgame of our increased reliance on technology, I'm terrified that he might actually be right.
And right he seems to be. The automated, sedentary world that Rosenberg has created is one that seems to come more and more into fruition every year. Of course, itself is a great example of the sort of corporation that enters our lives as a convenience, but soon becomes an addiction and ultimately a dependence.
But UPGRADE is not merely a cautionary tale about the dangers of technology. It is a first-rate cinematic story with terrific illustrations worthy of the big-screen.
Highly recommended.
A well-drawn comic about the online world in 2058. A regular guy enters "The System" and gets his daily upgrade from small fry to Alpha male of the business world. The worst thing that could happen to such a person is to lose access to "The System" and have to remain the small fry that he is. Well, that is just what happens to the story's hero as he is falsely convicted of a crime and shut out of "The System". Definitely a sequel on the way. Looking forward to it.
There was nothing wrong with the book, it just wasn't a story I could get into. Also, a little tough to follow at times.
Upgrade presents scarey predictions of a world to come.
Sci-Fi becomes reality with all the upgrades of scientific innovations.
It creates a lonesome existance where nothing is as it seems.
Well done.
This is one of the most imaginative futuristic worlds I've ever encountered. A world in which our online social status IS our entire persona seems like a plausible path from which technology is currently directing us. I love stepping into a new world that writers take meticulous steps to create, this is one of them and I highly recommend the read!
Upgrade takes you to a world so unlike our own, and yet, so eerily similar. It's an engrossing read and a creative warning to us all as we become more enamored with, and dependent on technology, to make us happy. Yes, it makes my life more efficient and productive, but I'm already thinking twice every time my computer announces I've got updated software to install.
