I liked the way the book went back in forth between the past and present but there are way too many unanswered questions. Like for example what lead up to Lilah's mother, Elaine becoming a drug addict and leaving her family behind. I know she came from an abusive home but she married a nice man who was the high school baseball coach and they had a nice home and he was not abusive. So what lead up to Elaine leaving her 7 year old daughter and husband behind.
I really liked the characters of Lilah and Chase and how they grew up as childhood friends because their mother's were best friends.
And I liked the dynamic of Lilah and Chase living together at the start of the book because his father had become a hopeless drunk and Chase's baseball coach (Lilah's father) invites Chase to live with them.
We get to watch Lilah and Chase try to overcome the deaths of their mothers which is their most difficult obstacle and admit their all consuming love for one another.

3.5 Stars - This is different than previous RS Grey books I have read. It lacks the typical funny, sarcasm in favor of the deeper topics of "How far reaching is drug abuse? Who ultimately suffers?' I felt this book was well written and really tackled a difficult topic. The way in which the character, Lilah, is written and introduced seems a little disjointed. It takes the reader a little while to figure out what is going on. Almost like the ramblings of a teenage mind. The writing was good. I just felt a disconnect from the main character, Lilah, and had a difficult time empathizing with her.
Words. I need words. They won't come - at least not to even remotely come close to bringing this incredible book justice.
I, admittedly, ADORE RS Grey's writing. I haven't read a single thing of hers that I didn't love with all my reading heart. Something about the way she mends together witty banter, soulful characters and an overall glorious feeling when reading her books has more than sucked me in time and time again.
But Chasing Spring is different. It is one of those books you open, immediately reach for the tissues, a cup of coffee (or tea if that's how you roll), cozy up in a blanket and prepare yourself for the biggest book hangover since.. well, since your last one.
The writing is poetic. The dialogue is beyond words. And the entire book is something unique, engaging and one I won't soon forget.
Add it to your TBR now... And don't put it off. It's too perfect to wait for!
Family is a crazy thing, and I think at times we all wish or want to run away from ours, or at least I know that I am tempted to. I could relate to Lilah in this story. To have your entire world thrown upside down and have the entire town know about it can be a devastating thing to have to live with. Aside from being able to open up and process her grief I understood her. She was such a relatable character and so much like the kids in schools now. She was hurting and didn't know what to do with it. I was worried for her and hurt for her. Even though Chase was just as broken, probably more so, he refused to give in to it, and let his pains get in his way. I was moved by him and inspired by him. I loved that he didn't let his issues with other affect his feelings for Lilah. He was persistent and loving. I think we all need someone like that in our lives. Someone always willing to fight for and with us. It was a beautiful and emotional read. I'm glad Mrs. Greys' husband encouraged her to finish this story, it deserved to be put out there!
This book is R.S. Grey's newest release and it was a book completely different from the ones I've read by her in the past. R.S. Grey usually writes stories leaning more toward a comedic side, but with Chasing Spring, the story was more serious. Completely different from anything I've read by her but still a book I really enjoyed!
Lilah thought she was done with her small town when she left it. She didn't want to go back. And she certainly didn't want to see Chase Matthews ever again. Too bad for her, both happen. But she's determined to make the most of the situation until she can leave for college. She finds herself in a bad crowd, you know, the crowd that does drugs and drinks way too much. She proves to everyone the girl that left and came back is someone else.
Lilah and Chase have been in each other's lives since they were young. Their mothers were best friends, and so were they. A long time ago. But sometimes fate has a way of bringing two people who are meant for one and other together. But Chase and Lilah have to learn to move on from the past, both theirs and their parents, and accept themselves for who they are before they can really be together.
Sometimes one has to love themselves before they can love another person.
This book was not what I had expected. Even after reading the summary, I was not prepared for this story to unfold. Lost souls, regrets, grief, anger and second chances. This is a moving heartbreaking and heart mending story. I've only recently discovered this author and I've thoroughly enjoyed the books I've read thus far. This was a departure from the romantic comedies I'd enjoyed. Even so, it was a great read, and its nice to see an author unafraid to try a different subject matter. Her writing style is unique to me when compared to my other favorite authors, and I find it interesting as well. The chapters are attributed to each of the main characters ( I'm sure there's a technical term for it but I'm at a loss as to what it is) and I think it gives a bit more insight into the main character's personalities. Lilah & Chase's story isn't entirely their own, and as they make their way thru the land mines left by others you will find a story that leaves you with a warm feeling at the end. It reminded me very much of a book from another of my favorite authors, A Little Ray of Sunshine by Lani Diane Rich. You just smile, sigh and think "yes" as you finish the last page. So very glad I read this book.
