I'm sitting here with tears running down my face (some books make me tear up a little or choke up but not very often will I have tears running down my face!) because I've been so moved by his conversations with his sons, and then the next paragraph has me laughing. It's truly a wonderful book. Very scientifically interesting but explained simply. Very emotionally engaging, in this man's relationship with his wife and two boys, and his myriad friends. Very sexy in appropriate places. Yet tasteful. This man, as other reviewers have said, is an amazing person. I haven't finished the book yet; I just felt compelled to write a review while it was fresh in my mind. It definitely makes me appreciate vision more, and want to take care of my eyes. And my brain. The book makes the importance of the brain to vision, really come alive. And makes what our eyes and brain do all the time without conscious thought, so awe-inspiring.

Crashing Through A True Story of Risk Adventure and the Man Who Dared to See Robert Kurson 9781400063352 Books Reviews

Amazing story about a man who, blinded at age 3, still rode his bike, ran, and even skied in the olympics. When he gets his sight back as an adult, he very humorously explains what it is like to see a sexy woman, his family, and such things as shadows verses a curb. It is both an uplifting story and an eye opener into the world of vision and the brain.
Wow, what an amazing story. I learned lots about blindness and could easily understand the difficulties the gentleman was having. I've recommended it to several and recommend it to you. It's easy to read and holds your attention. Enjoy.
Too depressing and I personally didn't care for all of the medical explanations. His wife was an angel who deserved better.
Yes - there are a number of reviews about how poor the author is; repeating events; lingering over certain topics - yada, yada, yada. I think the subject is the fascinating part of this book. The author does a decent job of relating not only the events, but also the science related to how the "eye" sees ... or perhaps I should say how the brain sees. That, to me, was the most interesting part of this book. If you enjoy stories about interesting people, you may like this book. If you enjoy stories about how your body actually works, you may like this book. If you like both - woven together in a decent fashion - then I recommend you consider this one. This author is no Laura Hillebrand (Unbroken, Seabiscuit) in telling the an extraordinary story - but the story is interesting none-the-less. I, however, was amazed to learn elements about the relationship of the eye to the brain and how we perceive the world around us through sight. Again, the author isn't an Oliver Sacks - but he does more than adequate job of relating the science of how we "learn" to see - something I never thought about.
This story is thought provoking and funny. It really has stayed with me and made me think about how I view the world. This story is based on a real man who led an extraordinary life blind and after forty years has a surgery to regain his sight, but his brain doesn’t know how to process what he sees. It was an easy read and the man is quite entertaining, but it has stayed on my mind longer than I thought it would and I find myself recommending it to others.
I just love this author, Robert Kurson. I've now read all of his books. they are all different, entertaining, well researched and different. I could not fine this book, Crashing Through, in the library, so I ordered my own copy. It was well worth it. Another great read. Kurson puts so much into his research, I imagine it will be awhile before he produces another book. But, when he does, I'll be ready!
Crashing Through is the story of a man who was blinded at age 3 and who never let it slow him down—then who underwent a radical new procedure to regain his sight at age 46.

One of the things I found interesting in this book, was the information about the procedure and about eye surgeries in general.

However, the part of this story that was fascinating was about vision in general. When Mike regained his vision, he couldn't comprehend faces or details. He could not tell the difference between men and women, he couldn't identify his wife's face, he could spend all day with someone and not be able to recognize them 2 minutes later. He couldn't tell who was in a photo, and barely could tell WHAT was in the photo.

The problem for the doctors was that in the entire history of time, there had only been about 25 people who had gotten their sight back after a lifetime of blindness—so no one knew what was going on, why it was happening, or if it would ever improve. Mike's case broke new ground—this was evidence that sight continued to develop during childhood and when people didn't have sight during that critical time, the part of their brain that developed to process sight, just didn't have any reason to develop. Those neurons were allocated by the brain to other functions. Part of the book showed different optical illusions to normal visioned people, which were seen as entirely differently by Mike. MRIs showed that Mike's brain circuitry operated differently in some areas. The scientists were literally able to make new discoveries about how brains operate, and how vision develops and works.

Interesting book, gave me a lot to think about. Recommend to anyone interested in science, exploring new discoveries, brains, and people who live courageous lives.
