AJ Adams is an automatic for me. I've posted reviews on several of her books and they are always positive. This one is no different, except the book is a departure from typical AJ Adams work. First, it's shorter (novella size I think). Second, it takes place in a fictional place with no sense of time/when (lots of historical time-frame references with today's speech and the synopsis is quite clear this is a fictional location, etc.).

It was bit dark, like AJ usually is, but in a lot of ways not as...the heroine was not sexually abused or promiscuous prior to the events in the book so not a lot (maybe some) of sexual hangups carried into the book. The characters were developed but not overly complex. The historical references were not quite as involved. But it was a good - really good - book! I liked it very much and even see potential for a series should that be the direction planned....and I will buy them for sure! There was a good plot, with reasons for the activity taking place, and it wasn't all erotica like many shorter books are. Terrific writing style and just a good read (a treat really).

One caveat: the synopsis lists the book as having dubious consent....there was no dubious, so if that's something you don't like, bear it in mind. It's pretty much explained regarding the H/h, and I could get there, but so far (if this will be a series) none of the others are.

I really liked this book, and AJ Adams remains on my automatic list!

Beast A Prydain novel Book 1 eBook AJ Adams Reviews

I liked the heroine in this book and kind of liked the hero with soft spot too though he was left more of a mystery. Some other male characters were also intriguing but there isnt any real chance for this story to continue in any direction since the female characters besides heroine are totally worthless. Though the book was a smooth read it was kind of half finished. I was left wanting more. Wanting a decent read with detailed characters and story worth reading and world carefully created to the finest detail. This book couldnt be sold in book stores. No publishing house would ever print it. Author has written better and for some reason her books always seem to start with action but then more or less fall flat. I have had trouble finishing several so it's something she should work with. Get these books of hers to Kresley Cole level since she obviously has stories to tell. Not sure i will ever buy another book from this author since i already kind of regret i didnt ask refund sooner. Wasnt really worth the time spent reading it.
I think this is a 5-star fantasy read. Fantasy is not really my preferred genre so I only chose this book because I knew from experience that I love what A.J. Adams writes. This was no exception even though it was quite a departure from cartels, mafia, terrorists, and the like. It is also just a novella so it fit perfectly into my busy week. I was able to read it all in one evening after work. Great storyline with a smart, brave heroine and a strong, violent but kind-to-the-heroine hero. Yes, that is what I like. Perfect HEA but I would have liked an epilogue. Maybe there is more to come for some of the characters and that would be great too.
Wow! This was an interesting book but I can’t say it was fun to read since parts of it make the beginning of Kristen Ashley’s Golden Dynasty look like a fluffy sweet fairytale. Dubious consent my foot, there is out and out rape going on and lots of it so be warned. What made me keep reading was that this book was set in a medieval type world with barbarian/Viking type men called Beasts wandering around. Although nothing can make rape right, it fits the setting, but I wish the author had called it what it was.

The town of Brighthelme found out the hard way what happens when you betray barbarians. A group of “Beasts” struck back by burning the town down, killing most the men and taking the women. It was harsh and brutal and hard to read. By the end of the book I had softened towards their leader, Rune, but I still wasn’t won over.

Wynne seemed to have the worst of luck. The women of this world were basically all slaves, citizens or not. Born a slave after her citizen mother was captured, she finally made it back to her mother’s family only to be betrayed by them. She goes to Brighthelme to clear her name and is kidnapped by the beasts. She was strong, intelligent, and never gave up even when the odds were against her. I liked her, but her one track mind set on clearing her name got on my last nerve. It was a seriously miserable existence she was living before being kidnapped, so I thought she needed to spend a lot more time focusing on her present instead of her seriously whacked need to clear her name so she could go back to her really crappy relatives.

With their boat burned Rune has to get his men and their captives across the continent, making sure everyone is fed and stays alive. I ended up liking him. He was unbelievably smart and resourceful and he seemed to have some honor. He saw Wynne as a strong, brave, compassionate leader among the women even if those same women reviled her and believed the accusations against her.

Again, this was a brutal book but a page turner. There were undercurrents throughout that needed to be paid attention to. The ending felt unbelievably rushed which really sucked. All of a sudden everything was wrapped up in a tidy little bow. This did not work for me and I ended up feeling a cheated. Again, when I finished I wasn’t sure I liked the book but it definitely kept my attention.
