If you've been following Joy's 'Matrix of Destiny' series, you'll be familiar with the side characters from Aviara. Gian's story can be read separately but it really is best to read them in order. Joy's writing is high on the lust factor and low on a thoughtfully detailed AU, but overall a good read. Her biggest weakness is her female characters. Without exception they are childish, immature, illogical, and their actions stop barely short of idiocy. Jenise, in this novel, is the best of all of them, and that's not a high bar. These women single-handedly can set back Women's Liberation half a century. They are like Doris Day, an unattractive anachronism in today's world of Katniss Everdeen and Anita Blake.
The men are all Alpha characters, and like most fans of MoD, one reads this not for Gian or Jenise but for the rare glimpses of Traed ta'al Yaniff, formerly ta'al Theardar. He is related to the Lodarres of Aviara, as is Gian Ren, and plays his usual "important side character" to the overall storyline (he is critical to all three MoD books). In "Mine To Take" Traed finally gets his greatest desire fulfilled...which turns out to be not quite what he dreamed it would be. Joy wraps up the action neatly, but all of us are still waiting for the Oberian slavers to be dealt with, and Traed to get his own long-awaited story.
It should be noted that subsequent to "Mine To Take", which was originally published back in 1997 (the original ppks have much better cover art, btw), Dara Joy has written three more (short) e-stories for the series. Rejar and Yaniff appear in "Cat Scratched". A very short and forgettable story of all the Lodarres is "Death by Ploot-Ploot". "That Familiar Touch" is the best of the three, with Traed appearing again in his usual supporting role.

Mine to Take Futuristic Romance Dara Joy 9780843944464 Books Reviews
Interesting premise and hot hero can only take this book so far. I loved Gian Ren who was beyond incredible in every way. The heroine Jenise was lacking a bit in comparison. I thought that the "worlds" in which the story took place were an interesting aspect whose descriptions were well done. However, there was something missing with the emotional involvement I felt. I certainly felt the sensuous elements and the sex scenes were beyond sizzling, but other than that I didn't feel a strong connection to what transpired.
I read all the reviews before ordering this book, and I'm very grateful for the encouragement to find it. This is a wonderful story and goes into my keeper pile.
First, I loved the creative love-making of the 'Familiars.' There's an anthology out there called 'Alien Sex' that contains short stories of alien, non-human, love-making adventures, and this story would have fit right in. I've long wondered about an imaginative way to present other humanoid love, and here it is! At first, you might be temptted to say - 'yeah right', but Dara Joy finds a way to make it convincing.
Secondly, the adventure of the story was entertaining. The worlds that they visited, and the sights, peoples they encountered as they escaped the Ganakari people, were fun.
I do think that the book represents a missed opportunity to really explore alien cultures. The setting were brushed over lightly. There were a few Star Wars moments - as if the author had watched a couple Star Wars movies and drawn setting details from the movie. So in that sense, the science fictional aspects of the story were luke warm. I very much think more could have been done with the female lead, the fact that she was actually the queen of the planet from which she was escaping got left out after about the first third of the book. I expected Gian to use the fact that he was with the queen of the Ganakari during his confrontation with their leader, to bring peace to their peoples. There were also tantalizing hints about Jenise's late blooming magnetic abilities. Anything special about her got dropped from the story. I thought her 'dance' - the one time only dance of the Frensi People, was a bit lame. More could have been made of the Frensi's culture & Jenise's birthright.
But at bottom, this book is a tender sexual awakening story. About someone who is searching for her independence, and has her journey co-opted by her male companion - in a predatorial sense. But since he's a 'cat,' you have the sense that she should have been watching for that. In fact, he warns her several times in chapter 2, when she meets, him, that she is in over her head where he is concerned, but she insists on her pre-arranged course of action. Actions have consequences - that's one of the axioms of fiction. And the guy has his own journey to figure out how to make the woman eventually fully embrace him, and her own sensuality. But, dear reader, when you look at the cover art for this one, don't be fooled into thinking the guy is not in control, as Jenise did.
Interesting to compare Gian, the Familiar, with Leopard-man, Ravyn, from Dark Side of the Moon, by Sherrilyn Kenyon - although I have to admit I also liked Vane, the big wolf, from Night Play. Mine To Take also compares well with Silver Angel by Johanna Lindsey, thematically, in terms of a sexual awakening story. In that regard, it also can be compared with Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Incredibly sensual experience with her wonderful creative storyline and the enchanting alien characters that are absolutely fascinating to read about. As this series continues to grow in depth and Enjoyment, for the main characters are wonderfully written and their struggles, dangerous situations, humorous dialogues will bring you total enjoyment and wanting to see what happens next and who's going to get a wonderful but also challenging mate. I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND that You Read the whole series as it is a pleasure to read about this creative storyline, although each book is a standalone with HEA ROMANCE...So please don't miss out on Dara Joy's amazing ability for fantastic writing!!🛀🔟🔰😍😍🛀🛀🛀🛀😍😍😍🛀🛀😍😍
