I had downloaded the sample of this book about two weeks ago and was not sure about it. But being only $0.99 I decided to give the whole thing a try and I'm so glad I did. I have a soft spot for sleuth-type books, and though I was apprehensive about it being more modern day, it really worked. The characters were very well written, both distinct personalities, and you could feel their chemistry right away. I appreciated how she showed Ash being cold and had walls put up, but when he showed his vulnerability I found it realistic. It wasn't over the top, and it didn't leave him the helpless victim needing to be saved (even when he did need to be saved). His reaction to the trauma was very realistic, and he left the pages on a strong, independent note. I appreciated that it was woman-led, and that Alexandra was strong and very intelligent in her own right. There's the hint of a possible relationship later between her and another character, but it wasn't the main focus of the story, and the attraction didn't change who she was as a character or play any part in the main plot.Ash and Alexandra are both flawed, but in a way which could lead to some really great character growth in the next books, and although the story was mostly wrapped up in the end, it left you hanging just enough to want to move on to the rest of the series. I will definitely be purchasing more in the Neve and Egan universe.

A twist on the usual PI novels. Well written and enjoyable. Looking forward to the next book by this author.
I am not a mystery/suspense fan, but I could not put this book down.
The police have ruled Alexandra's best friend's death a tragic suicide but Alexandra refuses to accept that her best friend would take her own life. After she stumbles across a clue that might mean her friend was murdered, Alexandra decides to investigate the case. The book follows Alexandra and her blind professor as follow the evidence and find themselves in the dangerous world of international mafia crime.
The characters are warm and true to life, the writing fluid and concrete, and the plot is fast-paced and fun. I was impressed to find out that this is a first-time author, amazed to find out that English is not her first language. Worth a read!
At the beginning, I found the writing kind of stilted. However, once I got into the story, I looked forward to picking the book up before going to bed each night, and was kind of disappointed when the book ended, knowing that I would miss the characters and their adventures. Will probably order the next in the series, something I have yet to do after reading a Buffet book.
This story is so different from any other crime novel. The characters are well written and they become almost real. Fantastic writing.
What a great pair these to make. She warms him up and he comes her down . They are and ice is a good combination here. Easy read and a very enjoyable one. I will definitely read another of these books.
You will enjoy the developing relationship between a student whose curiosity gets her involved with a criminal investigation and her blind professor whose stand-offish personality has made him a butt of mocking comments from many of his students -- comments which his extraordinary hearing have allowed him to hear. By the end of the book you will be hoping for a sequel as this team offers inventive ways to survey a crime scene.
I should really give this book 3 1/2 stars, and what most bothered me about it was that the entire book was double spaced -- not the fault of the author. Double spacing, like large print, means the reader is turning the page every few seconds which I find distracting. This is a rather admirable effort for a first book. The plot is intriguing, and the relationship between the two main characters is original and appealing. My problem was with the way the main character, Alexandra Neve, reacted in several situations. It seemed unnatural and forced. That said, I found the characters interesting enough that I plan to give her second book in the series, Ruby Heart, a try.
